Dear Friends,

Thank you for visiting the website of our local mission, the Jamaican Orthodox Mission (JOM). We hope that your exploration of our website will acquaint you with the faith, cultural heritage, and rich history of our community.

THE JAMAICAN ORTHODOX MISSION

The JOM was established on April 24, 2015, in response to the efforts of a Jamaican named Marlon Myers, now known as Moses. He was previously a member of a Pentecostal Holiness Christian denomination, The Church of God of Prophecy.

In March 2014, Moses converted to Orthodox Christianity and formally became a member of the Orthodox Church on November 14, 2015.

The Jamaican Orthodox Mission (JOM) is under the jurisdiction of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside Russia (ROCOR) – Moscow Patriarchate (MP).

OUR COMMUNITIES

Both of our current parish churches were first founded in the parish of St. Ann, where Moses lived. During that time, individuals interested in Orthodox Christianity started attending Typika services and Bible Study sessions at his home. As the number of attendees increased, the meetings were moved to areas closer to their residences, and formal Orthodox communities were established, namely:

  1. St. Timothy the Apostle Orthodox Church (Kingston) was formally established on July 7, 2017.
  2. St. Moses the Black Orthodox Church (Trelawny) was formally established on October 9, 2019.

The mission is currently working to establish more Orthodox communities across the island.

OUT OF MANY, ONE PEOPLE

The members of both our Southern and Northern Orthodox communities are mainly Jamaican-born. However, attendees to services include people from varying ethnic groups, mostly Orthodox immigrants living on the island and their descendants.

Since its establishment, the mission has attracted the attention of Orthodox Christians worldwide. Many have already visited the island and have either attended the services or interacted with members of the Jamaican Orthodox community. These individuals were mainly from countries such as the United States of America, Canada, Greece, Russia, Ethiopia, India, Bulgaria, Syria, Ukraine, Lebanon, Mexico, Serbia, and Romania.

OUR MISSION

The mission of the Orthodox Church in Jamaica is to proclaim the Gospel of Christ, to teach and spread the Orthodox Christian Faith, to energize, cultivate, and guide the life of the Church in Jamaica according to the Orthodox Christian Faith and Tradition.

The Jamaican Orthodox Mission sanctifies the faithful through divine worship, especially the Holy Eucharist and other Sacraments, building the spiritual and ethical life of the faithful in accordance with the Holy Scriptures, Sacred Tradition, the doctrines and canons of the Ecumenical and Local Councils, the canons of the Holy Apostles and the Fathers of the Church and of all other Councils recognized by the Orthodox Church.

The mission serves as a beacon, carrier, and witness of the message of Christ to all persons living in Jamaica through divine worship, preaching, teaching, and the living of the Orthodox Christian Faith.
